Oswestry Olympians Juniors Newsletter – January 2014

W: F: Oswestry Olympians Juniors    T: 07903479861

There will be NO TRAINING at the Marches School during half term 17-21st February.

We are still looking for volunteers to help at Thursday training sessions from 6-8pm. So far,

seven parents have signed up but we need at least another five to enable us to continue up to the

   Easter holidays.

Please come in to the Sportshall to collect children promptly at the end of sessions.

Due to the dark evenings, NO CHILDREN UNDER 16 will be allowed to leave unaccompanied.

   Summer Competitions

Dates for track and field competitions are beginning to be confirmed. Oswestry Olympians will

be competing in the Shropshire Young Athletes League (SYAL) U11’s – U17’s and the Youth

   Development League (YDL) U17-U20’s.

Open meetings will be advertised on the Facebook page and club website so please check them

   Sportshall League

The final Sportshall League meeting will be held at the Marches Sportshall in Oswestry.

We will need volunteers from 1.15pm to help set up the equipment and then tidy away at the end

   of the meeting.

A special plea to all parents to become more involved in the running of the juniors section of

the club. Despite repeated pleas for help, only a handful of parents offer to help regularly and

the situation has reached crisis point. We will be unable to compete in the cross country and

sportshall leagues next year unless there are volunteers prepared to take over the organisation

   of teams for these competitions.

Natalie and I have been involved with Oswestry Olympians for 10 years now and feel that it is

time for others to take over. Whilst we are happy to continue coaching and planning training

sessions we no longer have the time to devote to the administration and organisation of club

Please don’t assume that someone else will do it. If everyone offers to help in some small way,

we can continue to thrive and be successful.

If anyone is interested in training as a coach or official please let me know and I can advise on

   which courses are available locally.

                                                                                                            Thank you, Tracy

coaching course

Written by

Is anybody interested in becoming a coaching assistant? We are hoping to organise a course in Shropshire, either at Shrewsbury or Telford. It is a two-day course for those age 18+ that covers the basics of the different athletics disciplines with no assessment.

The cost is £165 which will be refunded by Oswestry Olympians to any candidates who commit to helping at training sessions for at least 12 months. This can be for as little as 1 hour a week. With growing numbers of athletes, we need as much help as possible.

help needed!!

Written by
URGENTLY NEEDED adult/parent helpers for training at the Marches Sportshall on Thursdays 6-8pm.

Natalie Bathers is the only available coach at the moment but is restricted to UKA ratios of 1 adult to 12 children per session and we are averaging 20 athletes.
Volunteers would not need to plan or coach, just help supervise and ensure all the children remain safe.

Please let me know ASAP if you can help, perhaps we could organise a rota so that you only need to volunteer once per term.

Thank you, Tracy

county xc championships

Written by
Have attached entry form for North Wales Cross Country Championships on 25th January. For those athletes who were born in Shropshire but live in Wales or vice versa you can choose which county championships to enter but you CANNOT run in both. Selection for the inter-counties XC at Birmingham is likely to be made through these championships. Please let me know your preference. The Shropshire Championships are at Lilleshall on Saturday 4th January, 3 in a team to score. There are no XC races organised for U11's by England Athletics, which is why athletes do not pay the affiliation fee. However, there are U11 races at the NW Champs for those athletes who have affiliated to Welsh Athletics.
